Consistently, pockets of Whitley and Oxford Road come up as areas where the families living there are likely to be struggling due to deprivation, high crime, low school attainment, health inequalities and isolation.
We run two weekly groups, one in the heart of each of these areas. The parents who attend each benefit from support and guidance from our Family Groups’ Co-ordinator. The children each benefit from the structured and age appropriate activities set out by our Play leader. We now integrate our school/nursery readiness project (Big Hopes Big Future) into these sessions, which is based on the literacy strand of the Early Years Foundation Stage and ORIM.
We build up trust with the families and often see the families that the statutory services struggle to engage with. All the families who attend these groups are isolated and the children have few opportunities to socialise, explore and develop their learning.
